Bangalore to Wayanad by charter bus
A Kerala crossing with a forest stretch, a ghat and a permit line on the invoice. Priced properly, with the entry-tax question answered rather than buried.
In short
Wayanad is 270–290 km from Bengaluru and crosses into Kerala. A three-day charter bills 900 km in a 33-seater at the class minimum — ₹36,000–44,700 before tolls and GST — plus Kerala entry tax of roughly ₹18,000–₹35,000 for a bus-class vehicle not holding an All India Tourist Permit.

Three-day Wayanad charter, by vehicle
Three days is the sensible minimum for a 280 km ghat run into another state. Billable kilometres are the class minimum × 3 on every class, which exceeds the 560 km round trip — so you are buying days.
| Vehicle | Billable km | Per km (AC) | Bata total | Charter subtotal |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 12-seat tempo traveller | 750 km | ₹22–26/km | ₹1,800–2,400 | ₹18,300–21,900 |
| 17-seat tempo traveller | 750 km | ₹26–32/km | ₹1,800–2,400 | ₹21,300–26,400 |
| 21-seat minibus | 900 km | ₹28–35/km | ₹1,800–2,400 | ₹27,000–33,900 |
| 27-seat minibus | 900 km | ₹32–45/km | ₹1,800–2,400 | ₹30,600–42,900 |
| 33-seat AC bus | 900 km | ₹38–47/km | ₹1,800–2,400 | ₹36,000–44,700 |
| 45-seat AC bus | 1,050 km | ₹48–65/km | ₹2,400–3,000 | ₹52,800–71,200 |
What the Kerala crossing adds
Indicative short-duration entry tax for a Karnataka-registered tourist vehicle without an All India Tourist Permit. On a valid AITP it should be nil.

|---|---|---|---|
| Tempo traveller | 12 | ≈₹5,500 | ₹0 additional |
| Tempo traveller | 16 | ≈₹9,000 | ₹0 additional |
| Minibus | 21 | ≈₹9,500 | ₹0 additional |
| Minibus | 25 | ≈₹10,000 | ₹0 additional |
| AC bus / coach | 35–50 | ₹18,000–35,000 | ₹0 additional |
Route, the forest stretch and timing
The usual approach runs out of Bengaluru on Mysore Road, through Mysore and Gundlupet, then across the Kerala border into the Wayanad plateau. It shares its first two-thirds with the Ooty route, which means it shares the same city-exit discipline: clear the last pickup by 05:30 to 06:00.
It also shares the forest-stretch character of that corridor. Wildlife crossings on this road are routine rather than exceptional, night driving through forest sections is restricted on this corridor generally, and any plan that has a coach on these roads after dark should be revised rather than risked. We build Wayanad charters to arrive in daylight, and we say so in the written plan.
The climb onto the plateau is a genuine ghat. A 45-seat coach manages it; a 33-seater manages it more comfortably and is the cheapest seat in the fleet, which makes the recommendation easy. Resort access in Wayanad has the same character as Coorg — plantation properties at the end of private roads — so the property name belongs on the quote request.
Wayanad, Coorg or Chikmagalur?
All three are plantation country at roughly the same distance from Bengaluru, and groups often choose between them late. The transport differences are real.
Wayanad crosses a state border. That is a permit question and, for a vehicle without an AITP, a ₹18,000–₹35,000 line on a bus-class invoice. Coorg and Chikmagalur are intra-Karnataka and have no equivalent.
Wayanad wants three days. The border, the forest stretch and the daylight constraint make a two-day trip tight in a way the Karnataka destinations are not. Compare ₹36,000–44,700 for three days in Wayanad against ₹24,000–29,800 for two in Coorg.
Kerala's road character changes the vehicle choice. Plateau roads are narrower than the Karnataka approaches, which pushes the recommendation further toward 27 and 33 seats.
If the group simply wants coffee estates and a ghat, Chikmagalur or Coorg is cheaper and simpler. If it specifically wants Wayanad, plan three days and ask about the permit.
Questions we answer daily
How much does a bus from Bangalore to Wayanad cost?
For three days, ₹36,000–44,700 in a 33-seat AC bus and ₹52,800–71,200 in a 45-seater, as charter subtotals. Add Kerala entry tax of ₹18,000–₹35,000 for bus-class vehicles not on an All India Tourist Permit, plus tolls, parking and GST at actuals.
What is the Kerala entry tax for a bus from Karnataka?
Roughly ₹18,000–₹35,000 for a 35–50 seat bus on a short-duration entry without an All India Tourist Permit, and ₹5,500–₹10,000 for vehicles in the 12–25 seat range. On a valid AITP it should be nil, since that is what the ₹3,00,000 annual permit fee pays for.
How far is Wayanad from Bangalore?
270 to 290 kilometres each way depending on whether you are heading for Kalpetta, Sulthan Bathery or a plantation property deeper in. The round trip is about 560 km, but a three-day charter bills 750 to 1,050 km because the daily class minimum exceeds it on every vehicle class.
Should a Wayanad trip be two days or three?
Three. The state border, the forest stretch and the need to arrive in daylight make a two-day version tight in a way that Coorg and Chikmagalur are not. If you only have two days, those Karnataka destinations are the better trip and the cheaper one.
Can a 45 seater coach reach a Wayanad plantation resort?
To the main road, generally. To the property, frequently not — Wayanad plantation stays have the same private-road character as Coorg estates, and plateau roads are narrower than the Karnataka approaches. We recommend 27 or 33 seats here and we check the property approach before the day.
Is night driving allowed on the Bangalore to Wayanad route?
Night movement through the forest sections on this corridor is restricted, and in any case a coach on these roads after dark is a plan that should be revised rather than risked. We build Wayanad charters to arrive in daylight and put the departure time in the written plan rather than leaving it to the driver.
Is Wayanad or Coorg better value for a group?
Coorg, usually — no border, no entry tax, and a two-day trip is realistic. ₹24,000–29,800 for two days in Coorg against ₹36,000–44,700 for three in Wayanad, before the Kerala permit line. Choose Wayanad because you want Wayanad, not because you expect it to be cheaper.
Does the quote include the Kerala permit?
It is shown as a named line rather than buried in the rate, and billed at actuals against the receipt. If the vehicle assigned to your trip holds a valid All India Tourist Permit, that line should be zero — which is why we tell you the permit status of the assigned vehicle at quote stage.
